The CLEAR Framework:
A Structured Approach to
Transformative Learning

This document describes the pedagogical framework that underlies every SRLHD programme. It is published here as a founding document — transparent about what the framework is, what it draws from, and what it has not yet been proven to do.

I. Why a Framework Was Needed

SRLHD was founded on a specific diagnosis of what is missing in most learning environments: the gap between knowing and thinking. Most educational programmes — whether in universities, professional development contexts, or online platforms — are designed to transfer knowledge. They measure success by whether learners can recall, recognise, or reproduce what they have been taught.

This is not nothing. Knowledge matters. But knowledge transfer is not the same as the development of reasoning capacity, and it is not the same as the kind of self-understanding that enables a person to lead well or to grow deliberately. A person can acquire a great deal of knowledge about cognitive bias without becoming less biased. A person can study leadership extensively without becoming a better leader. The gap between knowing and actually changing is not addressed by more content. It is addressed by a different kind of learning structure.

The CLEAR Framework was designed to close that gap. It is not a content framework — it does not specify what should be taught. It is a pedagogical framework — it specifies the sequence and structure through which content should be engaged in order to produce durable change in thinking, behaviour, and self-understanding.

Every lesson in every SRLHD programme follows this framework. The five phases — Challenge, Learn, Examine, Apply, Reflect — are not optional stages. They are the architecture through which every learning experience is built.

II. The Intellectual Traditions We Drew From

The CLEAR Framework is not an invention from nothing. It is a synthesis of several well-established traditions in educational theory and practice. We name them explicitly because intellectual honesty requires it, and because naming them allows anyone to interrogate the framework against those traditions directly.

John Dewey established that genuine learning begins with experience — with a problem encountered in the world — and proceeds through reflection and conceptual development toward new understanding. His argument that education is not preparation for life but a form of life itself is foundational to how CLEAR treats the learning experience as something that should be real, not merely preparatory.

Paulo Freire argued against what he called the banking model of education — the treatment of learners as empty vessels into which knowledge is deposited. His insistence on dialogue as the mechanism of genuine education, and on the learner as an active agent rather than a passive recipient, is directly operative in the Examine phase of CLEAR.

Jack Mezirow developed the theory of transformative learning — the process by which adults revise the frames of reference through which they interpret experience. His identification of critical reflection on assumptions as the central mechanism of adult development shapes both the Examine and Reflect phases, and is the theoretical basis for CLEAR's insistence on reflection as structural rather than optional.

David Kolb proposed the experiential learning cycle — a four-stage model in which concrete experience is followed by reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation, and active experimentation. CLEAR is not a direct adoption of Kolb's cycle, but it is informed by his core argument: that learning which does not move from concept to action and back again is incomplete.

Lev Vygotsky introduced the concept of the zone of proximal development — the space between what a learner can do independently and what they can do with structured support. CLEAR is designed to operate in that zone. The Challenge is chosen because it sits at the edge of current competence. The support — through Learn, Examine, and Apply — is designed to help the learner cross it.

Socrates understood that knowledge which cannot survive questioning is not yet knowledge. The method that bears his name — elenchus, the practice of structured interrogation — is the direct ancestor of the Examine phase. The AI interlocutor is designed to ask the kind of questions that expose assumptions, invite reconsideration, and make the learner's reasoning visible to themselves.

Daniel Kahneman and Keith Stanovich provided the empirical foundation for our understanding of how human reasoning actually works — not as a logical system that errs occasionally, but as a dual-process system in which fast, intuitive, pattern-matching cognition is the default, and slow, deliberate, analytical reasoning requires effort and conditions that support it. The CLEAR framework is designed to create those conditions.

Ronald Heifetz and Robert Kegan extended these insights into the domain of leadership and adult development respectively. Heifetz's distinction between technical and adaptive challenges — and his argument that most leadership failures involve treating adaptive challenges as if they were technical — informs how CLEAR approaches the Challenge phase in leadership content. Kegan's model of adult development as a progression of increasingly complex subject-object relations informs how we think about the Reflect phase as a site of genuine developmental possibility, not merely retrospective summary.

III. The Five Phases

Each lesson in every SRLHD programme moves through five phases in sequence. The sequence is not arbitrary. Each phase creates the conditions for the next. Skipping a phase does not produce a shorter lesson — it produces a structurally incomplete learning experience.

CChallenge

Every lesson begins with a real problem the learner cannot easily resolve.

The Challenge phase is not a warm-up. It is the pedagogical act that determines whether learning will occur at all. When a learner encounters a question they cannot answer with existing knowledge, something important happens: their current mental models are exposed as insufficient. This is not comfortable. It is not meant to be. Discomfort at the boundary of competence is the condition under which genuine learning becomes possible. The Challenge is drawn from real-world contexts in reasoning, leadership, and human development. It is not abstract. It is not hypothetical for the sake of it. It is the kind of problem that a thoughtful professional or reflective human being actually faces. The learner is asked to engage with it before they have been taught anything. This sequencing is deliberate. It draws on the problem-based learning tradition developed in medical education and extended across disciplines, and on Dewey's foundational argument that learning begins with felt difficulty — not with information transfer.

LLearn

Structured content, grounded in scholarship, delivered with intellectual rigour.

The Learn phase provides the conceptual tools the learner needs to engage seriously with the Challenge. This is not passive reading. The content is written to be argued with. It introduces ideas from the relevant intellectual tradition — in reasoning, this means the work of Kahneman, Stanovich, Toulmin, and others; in leadership, the traditions of Heifetz, Senge, and Edmondson; in human development, the frameworks of Kegan, Erikson, Vygotsky, and Mezirow. These traditions are not summarised superficially. The Learn phase takes the position that learners deserve to be treated as capable of engaging with real ideas at genuine depth. The content is structured around a core insight, supported by layered elaboration, and extended for those who wish to go further. This structure draws on what cognitive science tells us about how durable understanding is built: through elaboration, connection, and retrieval — not through passive exposure. The work of Ambrose, Brown, Roediger, and McDaniel on effective learning practices informs how content is sequenced and how recall is invited.

EExamine

Dialogue with an AI interlocutor trained to question, not to validate.

The Examine phase is where the framework most visibly departs from conventional online learning. The learner does not complete a multiple-choice quiz. They enter a structured dialogue. Our AI interlocutor — trained on the content of the lesson and oriented toward productive challenge rather than affirmation — asks questions. It listens to the responses. It presses on inconsistencies. It invites the learner to go further than their first answer. This is the Socratic tradition, operationalised at scale. The philosophical lineage is explicit: Socrates understood that knowledge which cannot survive questioning is not yet knowledge. The Examine phase operationalises this by creating a structured space where the learner must articulate, defend, and if necessary revise their thinking. It draws additionally on Mezirow's transformative learning theory, which identifies critical reflection on assumptions as the mechanism by which perspective transformation occurs. The AI does not tell the learner they are wrong. It asks questions that make the wrongness — or the incompleteness, or the unexamined assumption — visible to the learner themselves. This is not a minor distinction. It is the difference between being corrected and coming to understand.

AApply

A concrete task that requires the learner to act on what they have understood.

The Apply phase moves the learner from understanding to doing. The task is always specific, always grounded in real context, and always calibrated to the level of the programme. In the Foundation Certificate, Apply tasks might involve written analysis, structured argument construction, or a reflective exercise applied to the learner's own professional context. In the Practitioner Certification, Apply tasks involve facilitation planning, curriculum design decisions, or the preparation of development interventions. The Apply phase draws on Kolb's experiential learning cycle, which holds that abstract conceptualisation must be followed by active experimentation if learning is to become genuinely owned. It also draws on the constructivist tradition associated with Vygotsky, which understands learning as something that is built through action in context, not simply received through instruction. The task is not assessed for performance against an external standard in the same way a traditional examination might be. It is assessed for evidence of integration — for whether the learner has actually brought the lesson's ideas to bear on a real situation, rather than restating them in the abstract.

RReflect

Structured metacognition: what changed, what remains uncertain, what comes next.

The Reflect phase closes each lesson and opens the next. It asks the learner to step back from what they have done and examine the learning itself. What did they believe before the lesson that they no longer hold with the same confidence? What idea surprised them? What question is now more alive for them than it was before they started? These are not decorative closing questions. They are the mechanism by which surface learning is converted into structural change. Mezirow's framework is again operative here: transformative learning does not occur through exposure to new information. It occurs through the critical examination of the frames of reference through which we interpret experience. The Reflect phase creates the conditions for that examination. It draws additionally on the metacognitive research tradition — the body of work, associated with Flavell and elaborated by subsequent researchers, which demonstrates that learners who are aware of their own thinking processes learn more effectively and retain more durably than those who are not. Reflection is not optional in the CLEAR framework. It is not a bonus activity for the conscientious student. It is structural. Without it, the cycle is incomplete.

IV. How CLEAR Differs From Conventional Instructional Design

The differences are not cosmetic. They reflect different assumptions about what learning is for.

Sequence before content

Most instructional design begins with learning objectives and works backward to activities. CLEAR begins with the problem and works forward to understanding. The sequence — Challenge first, content second — is not a presentational choice. It is a pedagogical one. Learners who encounter a problem before they encounter its solution are more motivated to understand the solution, more likely to retain it, and more capable of applying it flexibly. This is supported by the desirable difficulties literature and by the problem-based learning tradition.

Dialogue over assessment

Conventional online learning assesses understanding through recall tasks: multiple choice, short answer, matching. These tasks measure whether a learner can recognise or reproduce correct information. They do not measure whether the learner has genuinely understood — whether they can reason from the idea, apply it in novel contexts, or identify where it breaks down. The Examine phase replaces recall assessment with structured dialogue precisely because dialogue surfaces the depth of understanding in a way that recognition tasks cannot.

Integration over completion

CLEAR is not designed to be completed. It is designed to be integrated. The distinction matters. A learner can complete a course without changing anything about how they think. They can watch the videos, pass the quizzes, and receive the certificate without the experience having touched their actual cognitive habits or self-understanding. CLEAR is designed so that integration is the measure of success. The Apply and Reflect phases are where integration is visible. If a learner cannot apply the lesson's ideas to a real situation and cannot articulate what has changed in their thinking, the lesson has not yet been learned in the sense that matters.

Honest about difficulty

Many learning programmes are designed to feel achievable. The content is scaffolded to produce a sense of progress and competence. CLEAR is designed to feel difficult in the right ways. The Challenge is chosen because it is genuinely hard. The Examine phase is designed to expose gaps, not to affirm understanding. The Reflect phase is designed to produce productive uncertainty, not reassuring closure. This is because the goal is not learner satisfaction in the short term. The goal is genuine change in how learners think, lead, and understand themselves — and that goal requires honest engagement with difficulty.

V. What CLEAR Does Not Claim

The CLEAR Framework has been designed carefully and grounded in established educational theory. It has not been independently evaluated. No external body has assessed its effectiveness. No longitudinal study has measured what learners who complete CLEAR-structured programmes actually change about their thinking or behaviour over time. That evidence does not yet exist.

CLEAR does not claim to be the only valid approach to transformative learning. The traditions it draws from have generated multiple frameworks and models, many of which have stronger empirical support than CLEAR currently possesses. We are not asserting superiority. We are asserting that the framework is coherent, that its theoretical foundations are sound, and that it represents our best current thinking about how to structure learning that produces genuine change.

CLEAR also does not claim to guarantee outcomes. A learner who moves through the five phases of a well-designed lesson may still not change their thinking. Genuine learning cannot be guaranteed by structure alone — it requires the learner's honest engagement. The framework creates the conditions. What happens within those conditions depends on the learner.

Finally, CLEAR does not claim to replace the relationship between a learner and a human educator. The framework is designed for a primarily online, AI-assisted environment. It produces structured dialogue at scale. What it cannot fully replicate is the kind of responsive, contextual, relationship-grounded support that a skilled human teacher or facilitator provides. The Educator Licensing pathway exists in part because we believe human educators who understand the framework can extend and deepen what the framework alone can achieve.

VI. How CLEAR Is Applied Across Our Programmes

The five phases are consistent across all levels and colleges. What varies is the depth and complexity of each phase, calibrated to the level of the programme and the prior development of the learner.

In the Free Introduction, the four lessons offer a compressed experience of the framework. The Challenge is real but accessible. The Learn content is rich but navigable without prior study. The Examine dialogue is substantive but not technically demanding. The Apply task is reflective rather than practical. The Reflect prompt is designed to leave the learner with a genuine question rather than a settled answer. The purpose of the Introduction is not to complete a learning cycle. It is to make the learner curious about what a full cycle would produce.

In the Foundation Certificate, the framework operates at full depth across 48 lessons spanning three colleges — Reasoning, Leadership, and Human Development. The Challenges are drawn from professional and personal contexts that most learners will recognise. The Learn content engages with the relevant scholarly tradition at a level appropriate for an educated adult without specialist background. The Examine phase is designed to expose the learner's existing assumptions about their own reasoning, their leadership, and their self-understanding — and to make those assumptions available for examination.

In the Practitioner Certification, the framework is applied at the level of professional practice. The learner is not only developing themselves — they are developing the capacity to design and facilitate learning experiences for others using the CLEAR framework. The Apply tasks involve facilitation planning and curriculum design. The Reflect phase engages with the learner's emerging identity as a practitioner, not merely as a student.

In the Educator Licensing pathway, the framework becomes the subject of study as well as its vehicle. Licensed educators are expected to understand the theoretical foundations of CLEAR, to be able to explain and defend them, and to be able to adapt the framework to contexts beyond the SRLHD curriculum. They are not licensing the right to deliver content. They are licensing the capacity to teach in a particular way — a way grounded in the intellectual tradition described in this document.

VII. What Remains to Be Proven

CLEAR rests on sound theoretical foundations. It has been carefully designed. It is, in our assessment, a coherent and defensible approach to the challenge it addresses. None of that is the same as evidence that it works.

What remains to be demonstrated is whether learners who complete CLEAR-structured programmes actually change how they think — not just what they know. Whether the Examine phase produces genuine perspective shifts, or whether learners learn to perform reflection without genuinely revising their assumptions. Whether the Apply tasks produce real integration, or whether they become exercises in demonstrating understanding rather than instances of it. Whether the Reflect phase accumulates into lasting change in self-understanding, or whether it functions as a moment of insight that fades.

These are the questions we intend to pursue honestly. The research commitments described elsewhere on this page are the means by which we will pursue them. We will not assert outcomes we have not measured. We will not claim effectiveness we have not demonstrated. We will not allow the theoretical soundness of the framework to serve as a substitute for evidence of its practical impact.

This document will be updated as evidence accumulates. When we know more, we will say more. When we discover that something in the framework does not work as intended, we will say that too. The integrity of the institution depends on the integrity of how it accounts for itself.
