“Can a good leader make an unethical decision?”
Most leadership training treats ethics as a boundary — a line you must not cross. But the harder question is what happens when crossing that line appears to serve the greater good.
History is full of leaders who made decisions that violated conventional moral standards and are now celebrated for them. It is also full of leaders who believed exactly the same thing about themselves and were wrong.
The danger is not that leaders make hard decisions. The danger is that the authority to lead gradually becomes the authority to define what is ethical — and no one challenges them.
This question is not asking you to excuse unethical behaviour. It is asking you to examine the relationship between power, judgment, and moral clarity.
Sit with these
Think of a leader you admire. Have they ever made a decision you consider ethically questionable? How did you reconcile it?
Is there a difference between an unethical decision and a wrong decision? Where does that line sit?
If a good leader makes an unethical decision and it works — does the outcome change the ethics?
